Plastic surgery is much more common than you think. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released a report indicating that the number of cosmetic surgeries performed in America each year has increased by 3% since 2008 to over million (http://www.plasticsurgery.org/Media/stats/2008-quick-facts-cosmetic-surgery-minimally-invasive-statistics.pdf)! It isn’t just Hollywood stars having work done either.
This may be because Americans are seeing the benefits of looking as good as you feel. Many baby boomers work out and stick to a good diet, but their faces continue to age. We have seen several of them in our New York City Plastic Surgery office that are between career opportunities and have elected to use this time to have work done. Like I say, “You wear your resume on your face.” Indeed, the study by the ASPS states that the most popular procedures were Dermabrasion (up 13%) and cheek implants (up 11%). They, along with Blepharoplasty (eye lift) can make a face seem more relaxed or youthful and energetic.
Interestingly, repeat customers sustained the demand for these procedures, the study report. This tells me that patients that explored surgical options have been so satisfied with their results that they have come back for more, despite prevailing economic conditions.
