Lipoma Removal

Lipomas, the most common of all noncancerous growths, are small growths of fat cells that develop just under the skin. They are firm, rubbery growths that are typically the size of a grape. Most patients seeking treatment have anywhere from one to three lipomas on their body. In rare instances, patients can have as many as 100 lipomas. While lipomas are not generally considered dangerous, they can grow to become quite uncomfortable. New York plastic surgeon Dr. Darrick Antell offers lipoma removal in New York City.

Once they develop, lipomas will not go away on their own. In some cases, they can continue to grow. Generally, patients choose to have lipomas removed because they are bothered by their appearance. However, depending on their position and location, lipomas can become tender and limit the range of motion to parts of the body.

Darrick Antell, M.D. removes lipomas using straight local anesthesia. Once the area is sufficiently numbed, a small incision is made over the lipoma. The incision is smaller than the diameter of the lipoma itself. Dr. Antell uses the “press and squeeze” technique to force the lipoma out of the incision. After the lipoma is removed, the incision is closed using a tiny suture underneath the skin.

An alternate technique used for lipoma removal is to vacuum the growth out using liposuction. An advantage of using this technique is that it requires an even smaller incision than surgical excision. Unfortunately, it is harder to guarantee that the entire lipoma has been removed.

Both lipoma removal techniques are performed in an operating room using local anesthesia. Patients are able to return home immediately after their surgeries. A post operative visit will be scheduled where Dr. Antell can remove any sutures and check the progress of your healing. Regardless of which removal technique is used, Dr. Antell sends tissue samples from excised lipomas to a laboratory in order to ensure that they are not cancerous.
